Kato Svanidze was the first wife of Soviet leader Joseph Stalin. She was born on December 15, 1885, in Tiflis (now Tbilisi), Georgia, which was then part of the Russian Empire. Kato and Stalin met in 1906 and were married in 1903.
Their marriage was short-lived as Kato died of typhus in 1907 at the age of 22. Stalin was devastated by her death and later remarked that she was the only woman he ever truly loved.
Despite the brief nature of their marriage, Kato Svanidze has been the subject of much speculation and interest among historians and researchers studying Stalin's personal life. Some believe that her death had a profound impact on Stalin's character and relationships with women later in life.
